Goodrich Castle is the most splendid in the county of Herefordshire and one of the best examples of English military architecture.
It is still impressive despite its ruinous state.
The castle is perched on a rocky spur above the River Wye, four miles southwest of Ross-on-Wye.
Godric’s Castle - no doubt named after Godric Mappestone, who held the land nearby - is first recorded in 1101.
Nothing is left of Godric’s stronghold but within the bailey, very close to the later curtain, rises a well-preserved though relatively small Norman keep.
Henry II took over the castle and the keep is generally attributed to him, but the royal accounts record very little expenditure here.
The keep is a tall, square tower with pilaster buttresses and Norman windows.
The original first floor entrance was later converted into a window, a new doorway being inserted immediately below.
Strangely enough, the existing curtain and corner towers are not the first on the site.

Dog owners who live near a forest, beside a river, or on a farm will be quick to tell you that there is something about stinky, decaying, items that appeals to dogs.
It doesn’t seem to matter if it is black swamp water, dead fish, or a pile of slimy manure, if it stinks and can be rolled in, the dog is happy.
While smelling like a walking barking sewer system is a dogs idea of heaven on earth, its owners are normally less then enthusiastic.
The odor emitting from their pet means that they have to take time out of their busy day to either take their pet to the pet groomer and have it bathed, or they have to bath their dog themselves.
Even then there is no way that they can be sure that the offensive odor will wash out of the dog’s coat.
Dog experts believe that dogs roll in things like dead fish, road kill, and manure in an attempt to disguise themselves.
What nobody know is why they feel the need to camouflage their scent.

In the past, photo editing was time consuming and tedious.
Anything beyond simply lightening or darkening a picture meant hours of painstaking work.
Something as simple as painting away a feature involved creating an entirely new picture, with the object being replaced by tiny bits cut out of other parts of the picture.
The extensive work involved in, say, painting out one of Stalin’s former colleagues, probably took days.
The world of photo editing today is completely different.
Paint programs like Photoshop make it easy to improve the features of a photograph, giving the photographer a bit more leeway with lighting and exposure.
Unfortunately, they also make it very easy to change the photo, and present something that wasn’t really there when the picture was taken.
Photojournalists have a responsibility to present facts, not fiction.
Editing the picture to correct a color cast is not the same as changing a dull grey sky to a brilliant red sunset.
